The Rhode Island Disability Law Center

RIDLC was incorporated in 1977 and is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, currently numbering thirteen, comprised of people with various disabilities and family members, as well as other individuals knowledgeable about disability issues in this state who provide certain expertise. In addition to the Board of Directors, one of our programs receives guidance from an Advisory Council comprised primarily of individuals with mental illness. At least one member of the Council also serves on the Board.

Supplementing its consumer-driven governance, RIDLC develops on an annual basis an agency-wide, cross-program statement of priorities for case selection and systemic activities, which describes how we will carry out the mandates of our programs, that is widely disseminated in the disability community. The public is afforded an opportunity to comment on our proposed priorities before they are adopted by the Board of Directors and thereafter implemented by staff.

Staff is managed by an attorney director, and consists of four other administrative positions, eleven attorneys (including two supervising attorneys), and a legal advocate. RIDLC's management practices comport with the United Way's Community Accountability Standards.
